Make a cocoa & pecan moisturising bar

A solid moisturiser with cocoa butter and pecan nut oil.

Today’s zero waste/ solid bar formula is the ever so popular solid moisturiser. You can call them balm bars or lotion bars or body melts, it is your choice :)

There are many ways of making a solid moisturiser. Formulators most often use cocoa butter as the base for this product since it’s a hard butter which could give a good structure to the formula. The one I have today has various waxes blended instead of cocoa butter to ensure better thermal stability.

I used a blend of soft and hard waxes. In general in many solid formulas such as lip balm or moisturising balms, it’s a good idea to blend waxes because they each have different melting points and have different properties. The soft wax is Oliwax LC and the hard wax is Candelilla in this formula. I paired the waxes with some cocoa butter and some exciting lipids such as pecan oil.

SOURCING

This is where I purchased my ingredients:

HOW TO USE

Use on cleansed skin, ideally straight after bath or shower when the skin is still warm. This will allow the bar to melt slightly therefore easing application. Glide the bar on the skin. Apply as often as needed.

THE FORMULA

The formula has a blend of waxes and a blend of lipids to create a great skin feel and glide. You are welcome to substitute any of the carrier oils but I recommend using some kind of ester as your main ingredient to create a lovely skin feel. I used Ecosilk but there are now so many other choices out there. If you wish to use different waxes, be ready to experiment to make sure the skin feel or even the structure of the bar is not affected.
