Make a coconut & orange sugar scrub

For 12 days we will be publishing one formula a day that you can copy or personalise this holiday season.

DAY 7

There are so many body scrub formulas on the net, chances are you have made one before. Nonetheless, I wanted to include it in this gift guide, because they can be very personalisable, easy to make and, most importantly, amazing to use.

The base is coconut oil and I also added the remaining alkanet root infusion from the dry oil formula (Day 3). This is why the scrub has this yummy peachy colour. I included Polyglyceryl-4 oleate, because this will help with rinse-off and you won’t end up with greasy shower floor. This ingredient can be left out, if you cannot source it so not to worry. Just increase the oils to make the formula 100%.

The formula is suitable for vegan consumers. It also needs a broad-spectrum preservative so please make sure you include one for safety.

Shall we get scrubbing?

PERSONALISATION

  • You can replace the oils. I think coconut is excellent in these scrubs but you can add butters or carrier oils of your choice. I heated the coconut slightly until it was a liquid, if you add butters, do the same; easier to work with it then.

  • Swap the essential oils. What’s more, why not pair the scent with colour? How about lime and lemon for green hemp/ avocado or strawberry or blue tansy with blue spirulina powder?

  • You can add 2-3% arrowroot or kaolin and reduce the sugar. These can help retain the scent longer.

  • You can also add botanical powders such as ground rose petals or matcha powder.

  • If you wanted the scrub to be less dry, change ratio to 70% sugar to 30% oil OR 72% sugar and 28% oil phase.

HOW TO USE

Use in the shower. Apply on the skin using circular motion to remove the dead skin cells. Rinse well with water.
